Why use a baby backpack?

Whether you want to carry your child through your local mall or just keep him happy and safe while you cook supper, a baby backpack can be a huge help. Most kids love riding on your back because it gives them a view of something other than shoes and table legs. Parents love having their hands free — for chores or helping other children, for example. And backpacks can be more convenient than strollers for getting around. Just try pushing through a crowded store or climbing a steep flight of stairs with a stroller and you'll see what we mean.

How they work

Baby backpacks are similar to camping-style backpacks, but with a seat for your baby instead of a storage compartment for gear. They come in a variety of sizes and models, with plenty of optional features. Most are supported by a lightweight aluminum frame that helps distribute your child's weight evenly over your shoulders and hips. You can put your child in a pack as soon as he's ready to sit up on his own — usually at around age 5 or 6 months. Until then, stick with a front style carrier. (Some front carriers convert to back carriers, too.)

Although backpack manufacturers say you can haul your child in a pack until he weighs as much as 40 pounds, unless you're an athlete in training, you probably won't want to. Many parents roll out the strollers when their children get that that heavy.
